The Edit: Pre-Loved Halloween Costume Ideas

With Halloween just around the corner it is already time to start planning outfits. However, if you thought the costumes and decorations were the scariest thing about Halloween, think again. Sadly when we tally up the polyester costumes, plastic wrapped candy and mass produced decorations, one of our favourite holidays quickly turns into a hair raising environmental disaster.

To ease your family’s Halloween carbon footprint, an easy change to make that can have a significant impact is DIY or secondhand Halloween costumes. To inspire you to make this change, we have searched far and wide for our favourite Halloween costume ideas and turned them into a preloved reality. You can shop all the pieces directly from our Halloween collection and receive them in time to go trick or treating.

Minions

With the latest minions movie, The Rise of Gru, launched this year your kids will love dressing up as their favourite yellow character. All you need is a long sleeve yellow top and a denim pair of dungarees or pinafore dress. Simply pair with some black gloves and black shoes and you are almost ready to go. For their famous goggles, simply cut up some card or cardboard into hollow circles and paint them grey or silver. Use some black ribbon or elastic to then tie it around your tyke’s head.

The Addams Family

A Halloween classic, dressing up as members of the Addams family will always work well and is an effortless way for the whole family to get involved. Wednesday Addams is an easy look to recreate with a collared black dress, black tights and shoes. Kids can alternatively choose to go as Pugsley in a striped t-shirt and shorts or Lurch with a suit and some make-up or face paint. We love the idea of little ones becoming Cousin Itt. For this you can use raffia made from natural fibres found at most craft stores.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Recreate an iconic film moment by dressing up your kids as Elliot and Gertie from E.T.. For Elliot all you need are blue jeans and a red long sleeve top, ideally with a hood. If you are feeling extra crafty you can try attaching a crate to the front of a tricycle or bicycle with a wrapped up toy to simulate E.T.. For Drew Barrymore’s adorable character, Gertie, pair a stripey long sleeve top with some dark coloured dungarees and style their hair with bunchies and white string or ribbon bows.

Futuristic Family

Look into the future and turn your kids into space cadets or aliens. Any metallic coloured clothing will work for this look. You can pair gold or silver jackets, cardigans or leggings and skirts with white, black or green clothing items depending on the theme you are after. For added details you can wrap any shape card with tin foil or try spray painting it silver and adding it on to the costume. Hairbands can make great antennas when you attach some silver sprayed, ping pong or newspaper balls on with some wire.

Witches, Ghosts, Black Cats, Zombies and Frankenstein

Last but not least there are plenty of options to create our favourite traditional halloween characters. Witches need black, purple or green dresses or tops and skirts styled with a witches hat or any other halloween accessory. Black cats are similar but can also wear black leotards and leggings. You can create cat ears using black card and a headband at home and the tail from some old black leggings. Children can enjoy being a ghost by dressing all in white. You can cut out a scary face from black card and stick it to the front of their outfits for an extra scary look. They can also easily become zombies or Frankenstein by wearing dark mismatched clothing and some face paint.
